SHEFFIELD SLIP CLAY is a native glacial clay. It is currently being used in a wide range of applications including moist clays, glazes, grinding wheels and other abrasives both here and abroad. The clay is mined from the ceramic grade clay in an extensive deposit located in Sheffield, Massachusetts. The mine has been in continuous operation since 1945. Sheffield Slip Clay is uniform in content and particle size and can be relied on to produce dependable results. This clay is an excellent substitute for the now unavailable Albany Slip Clay, and can be used for the same applications with some minor modifications. A geological comparison review of the Sheffield and Albany clays, as well as a chemical analysis are available. Sheffield Slip Clay is available for shipment packaged in 50 lb. bags. The dry pottery clay mix is palletized with 60 bags per pallet and shrink wrapped.
The following suggestions are approximations and each formula should be tested before production. If the Albany was a component of a formula (about 50% or less), we suggest fluxing the Sheffield with frits since Sheffield Slip Clay is higher in iron and slightly more refractory than the Albany. At cone 6, we recommend using 70-80% Sheffield to 20-30% frit 3195. At cone 9-10, use 80-90% Sheffield to 10-20% frit 3110, 3819, or 3124.
