Applied before burning, liquid coatings—pottery glazes—create a smooth, ornamental, and protective finish on ceramics. These glazes improve visual attractiveness, water resistance, and durability, therefore transforming pottery from artistic to practical. Their composition will determine whether they generate glossy, matte, transparent, or textured effects.

Made from silica, fluxes, and colorants, ceramic glazes bind to the surface in a kiln under high temperatures. Popular glaze varieties provide different textures and depth: glossy, satin, matte, celadon. While some glazes, such as food-safe glazes, guarantee pottery remains safe for daily use, others, such raku and ash glazes, produce erratic, organic patterns.
